Raising A Mathematician – an inter-school competition on Mathematics

School of Vedic Mathematics and Holy Angels’ School & Jr. College are happy to announce an Inter-School Competition on Mathematics – Raising A Mathematician, that will be conducted on 15th and 22nd December 2012 as a part of celebrating Srinivasa Ramanujan’s 125th birth anniversary. The purpose of this contest is to provide an opportunity for maximum students to participate in different events based on Mathematics thus bringing them closer to the subject. Unlike other competitive exams in Mathematics, in this contest there will be different events where even average students can display their skills. The four contests in the event are:

• Test on Numerical Skills
• Solving Geometric Puzzles
• Mathematics Debates
• Seminar (Paper Presentation on Mathematics)

Contest # 1 – MATHS RECKONING, a test Numerical Ability (Individual event)
A written exam to test numerical skills, and only numerical skills. Unlike usual competitive exams in Mathematics which require a lot of training and problem-solving skills, this contest is based purely on direct numerical questions like 42 x 89; or 76% of 28, where only the calculation speed and logical ways of doing calculations is tested. Here, anyone who is fast with calculation can excel.

Contest # 2 – PUZZLE WRANGLING, Solving Geometric Puzzles (Group event)
The world is made up on patterns. Only a creative and observing mind can find out patterns in it. This contest is to solve the given geometric puzzles which require less of mathematical knowledge and more of observation, logic and lateral thinking. It is a group event where different groups will be solving their puzzles in hand. The group who is able to solve the puzzle first, wins.

Contest # 3 – MATHS DEBATE (Group event)
Before 1450 CE, most part of the world believed that the earth is flat because it was taught to them that way. Only Copernicus questioned it and thought upon it. He argued, he debated and finally he proved logically and analytically that earth cannot be flat.

Some students have excellent logical and analytical skills. However, they don’t get an opportunity often to explore it much. Here, the participants will be given an opportunity to debate upon a topic in Maths. The idea is to think about a problem, a concept or anything for that matter, from different angles and not just in one angle as they learn in school.

Contest # 4 – SEMINAR (Individual presentation on a topic)
Many children get away with Maths by mugging up formulae without actually understanding the concept. Very few try to understand the basic concepts in Maths, to understand derivation of formulae and realize the purpose of learning a topic. This contest will test the conceptual clarity in a student when he/she will present a concept in the seminar. At the end of a 10-minute presentation by the participant, judges can ask any question pertaining to the topic which has to be clarified by the presenter. Points will be based on presentation skills, conceptual clarity in the subject, and clarity in answers given at the end of the presentation.
